In February this year, an academic, one Dr. Simon Laham, from the University of Melbourne in Australia, extolled the “virtues” of sin in his book, “The Joy of Sin: The Psychology of the Seven Deadlies (And why they are so good for you. )” According to him, Lust, for example, can make us smarter, it makes us helpful and it builds love! Lustful love, now there’s an oxymoron.
This man has obviously been brainwashed by his exposure to and embrace of atheistic ideology which denies the existence of God (that in itself makes this man a fool because the Bible says the fool has said in his heart there is no God) .However, surely even he cannot ignore the fact that sin has consequences, none of them good. Medical evidence clearly shows that the sins of the flesh e.g fornication, adultery, prostitution etc can have fearful physical consequences and we know that uncontrolled anger can lead to and has led to murder.
There is pleasure in sin (the Bible says so) but the pleasure is fleeting, and unconfessed, unforgiven sin pays terrible wages i.e spiritual death (hell). Yet, Dr.Laham arrogantly states that when you take a look at the evidence, the Seven deadly sins can really serve us quite well despite being told for centuries they are bad for us. The evidence ? Sinful man will always find studies and statistics that downplay or ignore the destructive nature of sin.
To quote him again ad verbatim, “This is great news for Australians as a recent BBC poll deemed Australia the most sinful country on earth.” (See BBC magazine Focus, February 2010).These pronouncements from Dr.Laham are like sedatives for the conscience, they will have a numbing effect on it, making it easier for people to engage in and justify their sin.
What saith the Scriptures about the Seven Deadly Sins?
Envy and Wrath, Job ch.5 v 2,” For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one….
Sloth, Proverbs ch.21 v 25, “The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.”
Gluttony, Philippians ch.3 v 19, “Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.”
Lust, 2 Peter ch 1 v 4, “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
Pride, Proverbs ch 11 v 2, “When pride cometh, then cometh shame….”
Proverbs ch 16 v 18, “Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Greed, 1 Timothy ch 6 v 10, “For the love of money is the root of all evil….”
Let us hear the whole conclusion of the matter, fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.
